On October 16, 2025, the Forest Trends organized a webinar titled “Overview of Vietnam’s Carbon Market: Prospects for Forestry Carbon Projects”, which attracted more than 200 participants from government agencies, research institutes, businesses, NGOs, and international organizations. The discussion aimed to share the latest updates on the development of Viet Nam’s carbon market, while analyzing the potential, challenges, and outlook for forest carbon credit projects — a sector expected to become a key pillar in the country’s emission reduction strategy. During the webinar, Ms. Nguyen Hong Loan, Director of Green Climate Innovation Company Limited (GreenCIC), shared her insights on the development trends of Vietnam’s carbon market and opportunities for the forestry sector.

Webinar “Overview of Vietnam’bon Market: Prospects for Forestry Carbon Projects”
Ms. Loan stated that Vietnam is in the process of completing its legal framework and technical infrastructure to officially operate the domestic carbon market by mid-2025. This will mark an important milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable growth.
In the forestry sector, carbon credit projects are considered to have great potential, especially through nature-based solutions such as afforestation and reforestation, improved forest management, and the reduction of deforestation and forest degradation. GreenCIC is currently cooperating with regulatory agencies, private forestry companies, and project developers to implement several pilot projects under international standards, contributing to the development of databases and practical experience for the market operation phase.
However, Ms. Loan also pointed out existing challenges, including an incomplete legal framework, high investment and monitoring costs, and the need to strengthen technical capacity and establish clear benefit-sharing mechanisms. She emphasized the importance of promptly issuing regulations on carbon credit ownership rights, technical standards, and financial mechanisms to encourage stakeholder participation.
Ms. Loan affirmed that forest carbon credit projects will be one of the key factors helping Vietnam achieve its emission reduction targets while creating new economic opportunities associated with sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
